Q Proposal Memo for Position Paper Cannon After reading the Position Paper Assignment, consider what topic you would like to research, write about, and present. This should be a topic that will keep you interested and engaged for the remainder of the semester. You will use the same topic for your Annotated Bibliography, Position Paper, and Presentation. This proposal memo is worth 5% of your course grade, so do take it seriously. • Remember that a proposal presents a plan to a decision maker for his or her approval. To win that approval, your proposal must be (a) realistic and focused, (b) carefully researched, (c) persuasive, (d) visually appealing and easy to follow. Your proposal must have all of the following sections. See the sample student proposals and follow the same format. • Your proposal should be about 1-1.5 typed pages in length. Brevity is good! Writing the Proposal Memo—the assignment 1. Follow the general format of the student example. Start with To, From, Date, and Subject as shown in the example. This should look like a business memo and is single-spaced. Double space between this heading and each subsequent heading below. Paragraphs within a heading are single spaced. 2. Use a heading for your Purpose. Your purpose should be spelled out in a couple of sentences up to a short paragraph in length. Be reasonably brief. 3. The next heading is Explanation of Purpose. Here you should briefly explain why you are selecting this topic and what it has to do with your future major or career. 4. Next heading is Problems to be Investigated or Questions to be Investigated. Your problems or questions to be investigated should state the subject you will cover in your report. If you have a preliminary draft of your thesis statement, include it here. Give this section of the proposal some good thought—don’t just dash something off. 5. The Methods of Documentation heading comes next. Here you will include what documentation style you plan to use for the duration of this project. You should use MLA, unless your discipline/major uses APA. If this is the case, and you feel comfortable using APA documentation, you can request permission to use APA documentation. You must request this here to use a style other than MLA in your Position Paper. 6. Next comes your Schedule or Timetable heading. Look through the class schedule of due dates and write a short paragraph explaining the dates when you will complete the various tasks associated with Position Paper project. 7. The final heading is Request for Approval. Here you politely ask for approval. Submission and Grading: You will be graded on your ability to fully address the assignment requirements, your attention to grammar and spelling, and your use of memo form. Explanation of Purpose This topic is important to me because I would like to work in a post-partum unit once I become a nurse. Questions to be Investigated The questions that I intend to answer in this report are: 1) Are the same important nutrients that are found in breast milk also found in formula? 2) Why do organizations such as The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Medical Association encourage mothers to breastfeed their children as long as possible? 3) Do the benefits of breast milk outweigh the benefits of formula? Methods of Documentation Since I use APA in my major courses, I would like to utilize APA documentation in this paper. I am comfortable with APA report format, and using this documentation style will help me write future papers within my Nursing major. Schedule I hope to complete my research by March 24th and submit my Annotated Bibliography the next day. After completing my research, I will begin my rough draft for peer review. I will have my rough draft completed for the peer review by April 4th, and I will also submit my draft to you for instructor feedback. Then I will complete revisions on my final draft and schedule a Writing Lab appointment, no later than April 10th.
